Week 1: World Book. Since I am currently teaching math in Junior High and High School.  I researched 'Algebra' in the different grade levels and editions.  In the Elementary School WB, the only listings for Algebra were 7 biographies about mathematicians. The 5-9 WB, gave a definition of Algebra and other branches or math and was fairly in depth and added more biographies.  The HS article was same.  The Public Library Edition looked just like the school Editions. The Foreign Language WB was not as in depth and looked much more elementary in content.  In class, WB articles on math would give the students an answer to the question they are always asking: "When am I ever going to use this?"

Common core: World Book would address some of the Math Practices more than the actual standards. General information on uses of math would help students understand why they should learn math.

  1. Welcome to the Challenge, Lila! I LOVE your discovery that you can use WB to show students how math can be used! Your common core connection about the Math Practices is true. Also, the English Language Arts standards are about reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language across the curriculum, so there may also be connections there, with vocabulary, etc. Thanks for your work here!
